The Royal River boat launch is located near I-95 in Yarmouth, Maine. It’s an all-tide ramp that is well maintained by the town. Two smaller runabouts can launch at the same time. The town collects $5 for parking by placing a yellow envelop on your windshield. Payment is through the honor system. The parking is day only unless you obtain a permit from the town. There’s a moderate amount of parking which can be exceeded during the peak times, but for the most part, you can find parking. One thing we’ve seen over and over – the town police who watch over the area and hand out the parking envelopes are friendly as can be. They are a stand-out. Once launched you’ll weave your way through the mooring area, passing two marinas. The Royal River winds 3 or 4 miles until emptying in Casco Bay. It’s a pleasant journey along a well marked tidal channel. But because it is tidal, the actual channel becomes more difficult to see as the tide rises. At low tide, you can definitely see where the shallows are. At higher tides, stick to the channel markers like glue. On our first journey down Royal River at mid-tide we came alongside a 30’ sailboat tipped 45 degrees on its keel as its owners waited for the tide to rise. Not sure what caused them to leave the channel, but a few feet is all it took to make for a long afternoon! The Royal River is a small river in southern Maine, United States.
