Fishing the St. Johns or the Allagash on memorial day weekend. Wondering if anyone had any insight into what is the better of the two rivers. St. Johns seems to be the larger of the two with more brooks and fly fishing holes, while the Allagash features many mountain lakes. We are going to be doing a 3-4 day canoe float so any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Also, any recommendations on flies for that time of year is appreciated.

Again, digging up an old post but figured an answer may help someone else in the future.

From my experience, it seems that maybe the St John is the better river for game fish, but also it is the more difficult for less experienced canoeists to navigate through. The rapids are bigger and go for longer stretches. Both rivers can provide great fish, but I think the St. John might be less pressured.
