Johns Bay Description

The historic Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (featured on the Maine state quarter) marks the entrance to Johns Bay and Muscongus Bay. Johns Bay - includes the Pemaquid and Johns Rivers and is surrounded by granite ledges and lush evergreens. A haven for seabirds, Johns Bay is home to ospreys, guillemots, and gulls. Johns Bay offers a wide range of sea kayaking experiences. The upper reaches of the Johns River and the Pemaquid River offer a protected and pleasant paddle, exploring the picturesque shoreline and quaint seaside cottages. The lower Pemaquid River offers views of historic Colonial Pemaquid and Fort William Henry, built in 1692. Johns Bay is also home to several uninhabited islands such as the Witch Island Audubon Sanctuary.
