Dead Pond Description

Dead Pond seems to be well named: No fish were seen or
netted during the biological survey of this pond. During the
summer of 1966, test cages containing brook trout were placed
at various depths in Dead Pond, and all the trout died within
a matter of hours. Dissolved oxygen concentrations and water
temperatures in Dead Pond seem suitable for fish, but high
levels of acidity exist at all depths. The death of the test fish
undoubtedly resulted from this high acidity.
To provide trout fishing in a highly acid pond in York
County, we made annual applications of hydrated lime. These
treatments lowered. the acidity and increased the dissolved
:>xygenconcentration, and thereby producing a more suitable
:mvironment for trout. This habitat improvement program has
ieveloped into a successful and relatively inexpensive project
:or the local fish and game club. Trout fishing is provided
",here there was none before.
Although it is unlikely that the Department of Inland Fish~
riesand Game will be able to adopt this type of fishery man.
gement practice on a state-wide basis, the Department will
;ive advice and assistance to local organizations who wish to
onduct this work on small ponds to provide trout fishing.
