Bald Mountain Pond Description

The north end of Bald Mountain Pond is part of the Maine Public Reserve Land system, and the Appalachian Trail skirts the northern shore. This is a wild place in a beautiful setting, with aptly named Bald Mountain dominating the western skyline. Unfortunately, it draws large crowds on summer weekends. Bald Mountain Pond is located east of Bald Mountain. There are many small inlets entering the pond. The outlet, Bald Mountain Stream, flows east into the West Branch of the Piscataquis River. The pond’s shoreline is undeveloped. Water quality in Bald Mountain Pond is good for coldwater gamefish with cool, well-oxygenated water at all depths. A wild population of brook trout is maintained by spawning in the inlets and along the shoreline. However, supplemental stockings are necessary to support a fishery. Bald Mountain is accessible via a series of gravel logging roads north of Route 16. There is a gravel boat launch site at the south end of the pond. The pond is open to fishing with no live fish as bait in the openwater season and closed to ice fishing.
